Piano Chord Lessons

At Piano ALIVE, we have determined that many of our clients have specific learning needs that are outside the scope of our traditional piano classes. Some of our customers already possess extensive knowledge and experience with playing the piano. However they may lack the expertise and training in specific areas, and would like to improve on them. Most common among these areas is the ability to learn, play, and memorize chords on the piano.

Piano chords are the basic building blocks in playing the piano in general. Also, knowing which chords to play is just as important. At Piano ALIVE, our Piano Chord Lessons teaches you the basic fundamentals of the piano chords. Our professionals are among the best in the industry. Our piano chord lessons begins with understanding the Basic Scale Types. You will realize that there are some 7 Basic Scale Types. They are the:

  • Major Scale
  • Natural Minor Scale
  • Harmonic Minor Scale
  • Melodic Minor Scale
  • Chromatic Minor Scale
  • Whole Tone Scale
  • Pentatonic Scale

What's important to realize, is that once fully understanding these scales, as taught by piano ALIVE, learning the chords and when to play them becomes a much easier task to accomplish. Learning the Basic Scale Types is then followed by learning the Basic Chord Types, and they are the:

  • Major Chord
  • Minor Chord
  • Diminished Chord
  • Augmented Chord
  • Dominant Seventh Chord
  • Major Seventh Chord

There's indeed a lot more to the art of mastering chords. Way too much to describe on this page. Please contact us to schedule a consultation with one of our Piano ALIVE professionals to learn more.

Improvisation Techniques

Improvising is the ability to hear a song playing (be it in your head or out loud), then be able to "jump in" on the piano and play the song, or accompany the song or person that's playing the song already. Improvising can also take on different forms, such as playing a song on the piano then, as you find it fit to do so, insert your own "fills and thrills" into the song.

One thing is very true about improvising, and this is that improvising on the piano is a true art. It requires that the player be very familiar with the song that he or she is playing. Additionally, the player must be very skilled and experienced with the timing of the song and the basic timing of music in general. This is very necessary in order for the basic structure and tempo of the song is preserved during the improvisation.

There are two key components to mastering the art of improvising:

  • Knowing the Key Signature of the song. This is essentially knowing what key the song is being or will be played in.
  • Knowing the notes and chord to play when improvising.

Our Improvisation Techniques is a spin-off of our Piano Chords Lessons. These lessons are designed to come after the student has mastered piano chords. We have arranged it this way since piano chords is an indispensable asset to the success of mastering the art of improvising.
